Set Polycom Hostname for SoundStation IP 7000

I had been deploying Polycom SoundStation IP7000 phones, when I found that DHCP reservation names kept updating to “Polycom_<mac_address of phone>,” from the reservation name that was set by system admins. This made tracking devices to reservation names to monitoring systems difficult.

DHCP Reservation

Polycom hostnames overwrite original reservation names.

After finding this post, it seems this has long been the normal behavior of DHCP.

The problem is, by default, Polycom does not allow you to specify your own hostname for the device, nor does 3CX (the PBX in use), allow one to be entered.

This required settings in the provisioning template to be added on the PBX. I was unable to find any information online or from Polycom on how to do this. Instead, after exporting some settings from the and analyzing the PBX template, I wrote this:

In a 3CX phone template, these settings go in between the  <device>  tags, generally with other provisioning settings.

Now when the phone talks to DHCP, it will be updated with the phone’s new hostname.

Fixed DHCP Hostname

DHCP Reservation name is updated with the new Polycom hostname.
